Recipe:

- 40ml Averna Amaro

- 20ml Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao

- 12.5ml Cynar

- 20ml fresh lime juice

- ca. 50ml soda water

Shake the first 4 ingredients on ice, strain into a prechilled tom collins/longdrink glass on ice cubes, garnish with an orange wheel/slice, top up with the soda.

As not necessarily the biggest long drink fan on this planet, this one is one of my absolute favorites. I was in love after the first test, in addition, it is still very easy to make and shows once again that it doesn’t always need expensive spirits in very good drinks (nothing >20€ in this case).

At the start very nice orange from the curaçao, but with the bitter orange from the Averna not as sweet and more with a dryness and bitterness than you are used to from Curacao. Then comes fresh, zesty acidity in just the right amount, after that -as a co-taster (blind without ingredient knowledge) has associated- the illusion of pickled plum. One can directly imagine the artichoke of the Cynar becoming a plum in combination with orange and some acidity. Then, further down the line, the slightly green, vegetal tone of the artichoke also comes through. Overall, the flavor reminds me of ume plums from Japan. Even after several minutes, the tanginess of the soda lingers with impressions of plum and bitter orange. As a little bonus, you can add 1-2 dashes of nice Barrel Aged/Own Decanter/Aromatic Bitters.
