Johann Goes To Mexico
Recipe:
- 45ml mezcal (preferably Vida)
- 15ml fresh lemon juice
- 15ml demerara syrup
- 15ml Angostura bitters
Shake everything on ice (for about 15 seconds) until sufficiently chilled, strain into a prechilled coup. No garnish.
You can see immediately that it's a riff on the Trinidad Sour, and therefore also relatively close to the Port Of Spain (the Dominic Alling version), but instead of orgeat it's demerara syrup and instead of lime it's lemon. Even if orgeat sounds more exciting at first, I have to say that I like both equally well from memory.
The lemon gives the other ingredients, mezcal as well as demerara and Angostura, more room to show their notes than the slightly more aggressive lime and also the orgeat, which mixes everything together more. Nice drink, also a cool template to play with different aromatic bitters and mezcals!
