Distilleria Quaglia Liquore Zafferano

Origin: Italy / 30% / Price: 25€

Antica Distilleria Quaglia is a family business in the fourth generation. Since 1890 the distillery, located north of Turin, has been producing high-quality spirits and liqueurs. To this day, the most exquisite and finest ingredients that Piedmont has to offer are used. Liquore Zafferano is made exclusively from saffron, without any other flavor influences. The precious stigmas of the saffron flower come only from the nearby farm Il Filo Rosso. For further processing, the stigmas of the saffron flower are macerated in alcohol for a long time.

It should be noted here, this is a very special liqueur for advanced use. The more basic home bar and even many advanced hobbyists will probably not use it often. However, if you are interested in unusual spices and high quality liqueurs, as I am, you can find an exciting flavor here at a good price (compared to high quality home infusions with saffron). This should be used accordingly, no other flavors that are too bold, rather only stirred drinks, then you can create something quite exciting with it.

Nose:

Obviously saffron, don’t expect a diverse flavor explosion with a single ingredient. But it’s a wonderfully warming, yellowish glowing kind of impression of color in the nose, this very own delicate spiciness reminds one of warmed ginger tea, sweet grasses, organic herbal honey

Taste:

The 30% are important here, in the end it remains of course a liqueur with a certain - but very natural and appropriate - herbal honey sweetness, the saffron remains throughout the experience the one intense note there and has a certain, necessary sharpness from the alcohol that many liqueurs are missing.

Finish:

The piquancy, as expected with saffron, does not remain as intense as some ginger liqueurs, but the hints of the spice linger long in the throat
