Passionfruit Down River
Recipe:
- 22.5ml Maker’s Mark bourbon
- 22.5ml grapefruit juice
- 15ml Aperol
- 15ml Fernet-Branca
- 15ml passion fruit liqueur
Shake everything with ice until sufficiently chilled. Double strain into a prechilled coupe. Twist a orange peel over top of the drink to express the essential oils, then discard the peel.
An interesting riff on the modern classic Paper Plane. Even after drinking it, I'm still not 100% sure how I would rate it. It's nice and refreshing, but the combination seems somehow unusual and strange with the bitter, minty Branca, grapefruit and then also passion fruit. Despite the 15 ml of liqueur, the latter is somewhat lost in the drink, which makes the name seem a bit inappropriate.
All in all, still a nice, refreshing sour with a few flavors to discover. Next time I would increase the bourbon to 30ml and reduce the Fernet to 7.5-10ml, simply to be able to taste more of the passion fruit.
