Freimeisterkollektiv Amaro

Origin: Germany / 28% / Price: 20-22€

Most German cocktail lovers will certainly already know the Freimeisterkollektiv, for everyone else a rough summary: It’s a very transparent and progressive network of independent, small manufacturers and distillers, in cooperation with industry experts and bartenders who develop and test new, exciting products. This can range from Mexico (Mezcal) to Spain, Denmark, France, Austria and of course Germany. Liqueurs, vermouths, mezcal, rye, even shrubs are just some examples, with new products being launched every few months or so. Additionally a lot of attention is paid to the ecologically conscious production, use of the resources and the same applies to all steps up to the final customer. My highlights, to anticipate future possible tasting posts, are so far the amaro, rye, mezcal, tarragon and turmeric eau de vie.

Nose:

For an amaro very fresh and fruity, lots of citrus peel, bitter orange, rhubarb, subtle sage and interesting wormwood notes, gentian very nicely integrated without the cough syrup association, even the peach comes through in a lovely way, some clove and allspice.

Taste:

Here too, for amaro clearly above average citrus and subtle fruit notes, brightness, liveliness, quite a unique character, bitter orange fresh and also dried peel, peach, rhubarb, wormwood and gentian, allspice, nutmeg notes, very subtle sage associations, the bitterness very elegantly combined with the fruit.

Finish:

A bit like a more subtle and higher quality Campari than a “real” dark amaro, bitter orange, grapefruit peel, rhubarb, clove, hint of gentian, bitter-fruity, but much fresher and less bitter than Campari, for example.
